The Charismatic Gifts

Scripture passages from St. Paul concerning the Charismatic gifts

Romans 12:4-8  (prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, generosity in giving (almsgiving), diligent oversight (i.e., pastoring), and works of mercy)

1 Cor. 12:8-10  (nine "Pauline" gifts: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, mighty deeds (i.e. miracles), prophecy, discernment of spirits, varieties of tongues, and interpretation of tongues)

1 Cor. 12:27-31  (apostles, prophets, teachers, [doing of] mighty deeds, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, varieties of tongues; strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts)

Ephesians 4:11  (roles of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher)

1 Cor. 12:1-3  (different spiritual gifts: kinds of gifts, forms of services, workings); one Spirit gives gifts to each person for some benefit;

1 Cor. 14:1  (prophesy greater than tongues; strive eagerly for spiritual gifts)

1 Cor. 14:5  (all encouraged to speak in tongues and prophesy)

1 Cor. 14:39  (strive eagerly to prophesy; do not forbid speaking in tongues; do everything in good order)

1 Cor. 14:23-25  (manifestation of the gifts should lead an unbeliever to have a sense that God is in the midst of the assembly)

Romans 12:4-8 / 1 Cor. 12:12-30 / Eph. 4: 1-16  (analogy of complementary functioning of parts of the body to emphasize how charisms help to unite the Church)

Paul uses four Greek words in reference to the Charismatic gifts: pneumatika - spiritual gifts; charismata - gift of grace; diakonia - gifts of service; and energemata - gifts of works.

St. Paul lists the characteristics of love in 1 Cor. 13:4 - "Love is patient, love in kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its one interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

St. Paul lists the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 - "In contrast [to the works of the flesh], the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."
